Whiskey and wine, oh my! 

Brookfield Zoo, 3300 Golf Road in Brookfield, hosts its first-ever Winter Wine and Whiskey Fest on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the zoo's Discovery Center.

There will be more than 50 seasonal wines and whiskeys to sample, complimentary hors d'oeuvres, live music and visits by animal ambassadors during this event for those 21 and older.

There are two ticket options, which include parking and zoo admission from 1 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 24, so you can enjoy the zoo before the event. General admission tickets are $85 ($75 zoo members) and include a commemorative glass. Designated driver tickets are $45 and include unlimited soft drinks and hors d'oeuvres.

Jazz it up

Local jazz fans have a couple of opportunities to hear some live music in the next week.

  On Thursday, Feb. 22 the Brookfield Jazz Society hosts concert featuring the Nicole Kestler Quartet in the lower-level Jazz Room of Sawa's Old Warsaw restaurant, 9200 W. Cermak Road in Broadview.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the music starts promptly at 7:15. There's a $10 cover charge for non-Brookfield Jazz Society members, $7 for members.

  On Sunday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m., Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 250 Woodside Road, hosts a concert of mainstream jazz with the Terry Sullivan Trio, featuring Riverside resident Bobby Schiff on piano.

Fanatics wanted

Brookfield Public Library hosts Fandomonium, a festival of fandoms – Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Star Wars, princesses, you name it – on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Celebrate your favorite fictional universe by making a Harry Potter wand, a Star Wars light saber or mini droid or your own GOT house banner. Younger kids can enjoy Pokemon activities and decorate princess tiaras or super hero masks.

There will also be a selfie station and a cosplay costume contest with a chance to win a gift certificate to a local business.

Forum on opioid addiction

Riverside Township and the Riverside Township Mental Health Board will host a presentation and discussion on opioid addiction on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. in the second-floor auditorium of the Riverside Township Hall, 27 Riverside Road in Riverside.

The event will feature a short media presentation and a panel of speakers, including representatives from the state of Illinois, police, Nar-Anon and addiction counselors.

Please bring a non-perishable food item for the food pantry. Refreshments will be served.

Artist talk at RAC

Riverside Arts Center, 32 E. Quincy St., hosts a conversation between artist Andrew Falkowski and Terry R. Myers, critic, independent curator and professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m.

The conversation is in conjunction with an exhibition of Falkowski's work at RAC titled "Flat Earth," which runs through March 3 in the Freeark Gallery, which is open Tuesday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road, hosts Beyond the Basics Genealogy on Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Public Meeting Room and Computer Basics on Feb. 24 in the Public Meeting Room.

  The Brookfield Elks Lodge, 9022 31st St., hosts bingo every Monday night. Doors open at 5 p.m. and games start at 7 p.m. minimum cash payout of $2,275 a night, plus pull tabs, lightning, tic-tac and raffles.

  Lyons Township High School invites the public to use the indoor track at the South Campus fieldhouse, 4900 S. Willow Springs Road in Western Spring on school days from 6 to 7 a.m. through March. No admission charge.
