Red sauce and fire hoses

North Riverside Firefighters Union Local 2714 hosts its annual Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser on Saturday, May 5 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the North Riverside VFW Hall, 2622 Desplaines Ave.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for senior citizens and children under 12. Join local firefighters for a night of food, fun and prizes. Proceeds benefit the union's charitable causes.

Remembering the Berlin Airlift

Learn about or relive the memory of the Berlin Airlift, one of the greatest operations in U.S. military history, supplying the citizens of West Berlin for more than a year in 1948-49 after the Soviets cut surface transportation to the Allied-occupied part of the city, which was isolated far inside the Soviet sector of occupied Germany after World War II.

Historian Anette Isaacs will bring this period of post-war history to life on Monday, May 7 at 7 p.m. at the Brookfield Public Library, 3609 Grand Blvd., to celebrate its 70th anniversary.

Do you Raku?

Lyons Township High School invites the public to take part in its annual Raku Fest, an outdoor, interactive ceramics event filled with flames, smoke, fun and art on Friday, May 4, from 3:05 to 8 p.m. at the South Campus south parking lot, 4900 S. Willow Springs Road in Western Springs.

To register, email Lorena Lagis at llagis@lths.net and send $5 for a small homemade ceramic pot. Spots are limited to the first 45 people. 

Cinco de Mayo Concert

North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road in North Riverside, invites the public to a Cinco de Mayo Concert on Sunday, May 6 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Performers include Orejones, Luis Alfredo Mariachi Singers, Mexican Folkloric Dancers and Dora the Explorer. Celebrate, dance and win prizes. 

Organic gardening at home

North Riverside Public Library, 2400 Desplaines Ave., and the North Riverside Garden Club present "Organic Gardening" on Wednesday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m.

College instructor Karen Starsky explains how to grow organic vegetables and fruits at home. Refreshments provided.
