Heavy rains in the Chicago area this week have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning for the Des Plaines River at Riverside.

The river is predicted to crest on the afternoon/evening of July 14 at about 7.5 feet, which is considered minor flood stage. Flood waters won't impact residential areas, but will inundate park and forested areas near the river.

One of the areas affected by flooding is Swan Pond Park in Riverside, which has forced the village to postpone a planting project there this weekend. The village had sought volunteers to help install 10,000 plants in and around the lowest area of the park, near the drainage culvert.

That effort now has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 29 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Anyone wishing to participate in the planting project is asked to contact Maribeth Reimer at mreimer@riverside.il.us or 708-442-3590, ext. 500.
