Show them you're true blue

The Brookfield Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Brookfield police and fire departments will participate in National Night Out, held each summer in towns across the nation to show support for police and firefighters, on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at the pavilion at Ehlert Park, Elm and Congress Park avenues.

Meet and greet first responders, have a look at their vehicles and participate in activities from 5 to 7 p.m. There will also be information tables, giveaways, snacks and more.

The event is free and open to the general public.

Car show and concert

North Riverside Parks and Recreation will host a classic car show in conjunction with their next summer concert featuring the band Claremont Drive on Thursday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Village Commons, 2401 Desplaines Ave.

Attendees can enjoy the baby-boomer rock of Claremont Drive and vote on their favorite cars. Trophies will be awarded to the winners. It's also Grill Night, so be sure to pick up some tasty treats along with some spiked tea for adults. 

Turn back the rock clock

Brookfield Parks and rec presents an evening of sound from the 1950s and 1960s with Rosie and the Rivets under the band shall in Kiwanis Park, next door to the Brookfield Village Hall, 8820 Brookfield Ave., on Friday, Aug. 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Food will be available for purchase. Bring a blanket, a lawn chair and the family to this free event.

Break out your kilt

Caledonia Senior Living and Memory Care, 2800 Desplaines Ave. in North Riverside, invites members of the community to bring friends and family to its Annual Picnic on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The summer celebration includes live music, food, children's games, highland dance performances and more. Admission is free (donations welcome) and bake sale donations are appreciated.

Tour the Chicago Portage

Friends of the Chicago Portage will hold their next walking tour of the Chicago Portage National Historic Site, 4800 S. Harlem Ave., on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Tour guide John Langer will explore Chicago's "birth Story" from the geological beginnings to how the portage functions today. The tour is about a half-mile on a gravel path through the woods. Wear long pants and walking shoes or boots.

The free tour steps off rain or shine. Meet by the statue of Marquette, Joliet and their Native American guide. 

Endless Summerfest

The Park District of LaGrange and the LaGrange Business Association host the LaGrange Endless Summerfest 2018 from Aug. 3-5 at Gordon Park, just north of Ogden Avenue and west of the BNSF Railroad bridge in LaGrange.

The fest runs from 5 to 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 3 ($5 admission, kids under 12 free); from noon to 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 ($5 admission after 5 p.m., kids under 12 free) and from noon to 10 p.m. on Aug. 5 (admission free all day).

The event features live bands, carnival rides (wristband specials), a car show, food and beer vendors, bingo and a human foosball tournament (Aug, 3-4). Fireworks cap the fest on Aug. 5 at dusk.

  Triton College and West 40 invite families to attend their first-ever Backpack Giveback Resource Fair on Aug. 4 from 10 .m. to noon on the outdoor mounds on the west side of the Triton College campus, 2000 5th Avenue in River Grove. Students can receive a backpack filled with school supplies, free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis.

  North Riverside Park Mall, 7501 Cermak Road in North Riverside, hosts a free Touch-A-Truck event for kids on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids can explore vehicles and the people who drive them, from police cars and fire engines to cranes and even a helicopter.

  Compassion Factory art gallery, 9210 Broadway Ave. in Brookfield, continues its exhibition of work by Jenifer Ann Myers, Paul Filippi and Rebecca Moy through Aug. 4. Free and open to the public on Thursdays from 4 to 9 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and first Fridays from 7 to 10 p.m.

  The Riverside's Farmers Market continues every Wednesday from 2:30 to 7 p.m. through Oct. 10, in Centennial Park, 10 Pine Ave. Weekly scavenger hunt for kids, live music and more.

• The Brookfield Farmers Market is held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 13 in the parking lot of the village hall, 8820 Brookfield Ave. Weekly special events and live music.

North Riverside Public Library, 2400 Desplaines Ave., hosts a Senior Drop-in on Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Meeting Room. Play cards and socialize every Friday. For kids, there's Stories and Play (through age 5) on Aug. 2 at 10:30 a.m.; Book Treks (grades K+) on Aug. 2 at 3:30 p.m.; Love2Read (grades K-1) on Aug. 4 at 2 p.m.; Bilingual Storytime (ages 2 ) on Aug. 8 at 10:30 a.m.; Mini Crafters (ages 3-6) on Aug. 7 at 10:30 a.m. (3D submarine); Mega Crafters (ages 7 ) on Aug. 1 (Paint your own ceramic bank); and DIY Dreamcatcher (teens/tweens) on Aug. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Brookfield Elks Lodge, 9022 31st St., hosts bingo every Monday night. Doors open at 5 p.m. and games start at 7 p.m. minimum cash payout of $2,275 a night, plus pull tabs, lightning, tic-tac and raffles.
