The Desplaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District has announced vehicles will be spraying chemicals to control the adult mosquito populations in Brookfield and Riverside on Aug. 22 between 7:30 p.m. and midnight.
After 3:30 p.m., the locations of the spraying will be available via recorded message at 708-447-1765.
Last week, the district reported that West Nile Virus had reached "extremely high levels where transmission to humans is imminent" within the adult mosquito population. The district also stated that while the species of mosquito carrying West Nile Virus is not aggressive, people still should take precautions.
Among steps people can take are avoiding outdoor activities at dusk, wearing shoes and socks, and wearing loose-fitting long pants and long-sleeved shirts. In addition, you should inspect and repair any damaged window screens and to eliminate openings around window air conditioners and clothes dryer vents.
People can also look to eliminate potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes by throwing away or removing items outside that can hold water; cleaning gutters, downspouts and flat roofs to get rid of standing water; and changing water in bird baths and wading pools at least once a week.
