Sports roundup: Bulldogs trending up in boys hoops

After a slow start, RBHS has reeled off 10 wins in 13 games

The Riverside-Brookfield High School boys basketball team's winning streak was snapped at six games by DePaul Prep over the weekend. The Rams defeated the Bulldogs 47-36 in the final game of pool play in the Loyola/Martin Luther King Tournament. The Bulldogs placed second in their pool portion of the tourney.

Senior swingman Ryan Cicenas scored 14 points for RBHS. Forward Jason Bageanis had eight rebounds and guard Zach Vaia dished out four assists for the Bulldogs (11-8, 5-1 Metro Suburban Conference).

In other action, RBHS rallied for a 60-44 victory against St. Edward in a Metro Suburban crossover on Friday. Vaia (15 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists) and Cicenas (10 points, 8 rebounds) led the Bulldogs, who outscored the Green Wave 36-18 in the second half.

Sophomore DJ Steward scored 17 points to power the Friars past visiting St. Joseph 60-46. The win improved Fenwick's record to 13-4 (4-0 in the CCL Blue).

Michael O'Laughlin (12 points, 7 rebounds), Billy Bruce (9 points, 6 rebounds) and Damari Nixon (9 points) also contributed for the victors.

"It was a good team win," said O'Laughlin, who had 12 points and seven rebounds. "I thought we stuck together, especially towards the end. In the third quarter, we started strong but then slumped. But in the fourth, we came together and closed it out."

The Friars went on a 10-0 spurt midway through the fourth quarter to take a 54-39 lead and put away St. Joseph.

The Bulldogs lost to St. Edward 58-41 in Elgin last week. Sarah JnoBaptiste recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Maddie Meehan added eight points and 11 boards. Freshman guard Brenna Lofus contributed 11 points and five rebounds.

RBHS (16-5, 5-1 Metro Suburban) struggled offensively, making just 16 of 55 field goal attempts (29 percent). The Bulldogs also had 20 turnovers, only five assists and five points off the fast break.

 "The team's progress this season has been positive," RBHS forward Sarah JnoBaptiste said. "We will continue to work hard and give our best effort all the time."

The Bulldogs came in fourth place with 159 points at their own invitational Saturday. Highlights included Michael Rosa's first-place showing in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 1.26 seconds. The 200-yard medley relay team of Noah Breit, Nolan Dowling, Rosa and Matt Towner finished second.

Senior Ethan Cabela rolled a perfect game of 300 in his third game en route to a six-game series score of 1433 at the Lake Park Regional. In addition to Cabela winning the individual title, the Lions placed first with a score of 6,531.

Seniors Casey Vanspankeren (1303), Otto Meccia (1279), Marco Garcia (1266) and Max Campbell (1250) join Cabela as LTHS advanced to sectionals.

LTHS girls gymnastics

Olivia Kalata earned fourth on beam and fifth at on vault at the Fremd Invite on Saturday. The Lions also earned their season-high team total.
