Tischler Finer Foods has been a mainstay at 9118 Broadway Ave. in Brookfield for a quarter of a century. And while the store has undergone some periodic facelifts and reconfigurations — the store made some major improvements this past summer — one thing has been constant.

The store has never sold alcohol. Not that its owner, Dennis Tischler, has anything against the practice. It was more out of habit. The family's former store in Western Springs was dry, just like its town at the time. The Brookfield store followed suit.

That's about to change. At its Dec. 9 meeting, Brookfield village trustees will approve a Class 6 liquor license for Tischler's, allowing the grocery store to sell beer and wine. Trustees signaled their approval of the liquor license during a brief discussion of the item at their Nov. 25 committee of the whole meeting.

According to Tischler, the new beer and wine department should be up and running before Christmas.

"We've had people ask for it, with most commenting on one-stop shopping," said Tischler. "We just felt we needed it. Times change."

The family's Brookfield store is the lone location these days. Tischler's closed its Western Springs store back in 2003. Rick Tischler, Dennis' brother, later opened Tischlers Market and Deli in Plainfield.

It's been a while since the Brookfield store received a major makeover. Back in the early 2000s, the interior got some new murals. But the economic recession held back plans for a more significant change until last summer.

At that time, Tischler's expanded its produce, deli and bakery departments and installed new produce cases and freezers. The traffic pattern also changed inside the store, leaving some room up front for what will become the beer and wine section of the store.

"We thought the [beer and wine section] would complement the new items," said Tischler.
