Riverside-Brookfield High School junior Emily Filec was honored at the school’s 2012 School Citizen of the Year “SCOTY” Award recipient, given annually by the West 40 Intermediate Educational Service Center to recognize “students who have been chosen by their schools as good citizens and models for others to emulate.”
Grades are important considerations, but are only part of the equation. RBHS uses school and community volunteer service as criteria for selection, and the student must hold a leadership role at the school.
Filec is an honors student with a weighted 4.47 grade-point average. She volunteered 200 hours of her time tutoring a Spanish-speaking adult in English, regularly volunteers at a food pantry, teaches first-grade Sunday school and serves as vice president of RBHS’ student government.
She received her award medal and certificate at the 16th Annual SCOTY Awards ceremony at West Leyden High School on March 21.
