Robert Jackson, 30, of Elgin, was charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding police officers on July 9 after leading police on a chase that started in Riverside and ended in Chicago.
At 2:35 a.m. Riverside police clocked Jackson going 65 mph in a 40 mph zone on First Avenue. Police attempted to pull him over, but Jackson continued northbound, driving through a red light at 1st Avenue and 31st Street. He reportedly fled along 1st Avenue, driving into oncoming traffic and running numerous red lights. Eventually, Jackson got onto I-290 and drove eastbound until exiting at Cicero Avenue in Chicago. Officers from North Riverside, Berwyn, Cicero and Chicago all joined in the chase, and the car was blocked off at Cicero Avenue and Harrison Street in Chicago.
Police said a passenger in Jackson’s vehicle attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by North Riverside police. Jackson initially refused to get out of his car, and had to be pulled out by police. He reportedly claimed that he had fled police because the passenger, a 20-year-old Elgin man, had a gun and had threatened to shoot him if he didn’t flee from police. No gun was found on the passenger, Jackson, or in the car.
The car, a 1988 black Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, was not registered in Jackson’s name, but it was not reported stolen, and police are still trying to find its registered owner.
Police also discovered that Jackson was driving on a revoked license. In addition to his two felony charges, Jackson was also charged with driving on a revoked license, reckless driving, and a variety of traffic violations. The passenger was released without charges.
Damaged library materials
? Riverside police are investigating whether the destruction of several videotapes related to the Holocaust at the Riverside Public Library last week was the result of a hate crime. Library officials believe that the five VHS tapes were damaged sometime between July 5-7. All three videos in the “Holocaust” TV series were ruined, along with “Anne Frank Remembered” and “Memories of Kristallnacht.”
Library Director Janice Fisher said the library has never experienced an incident like this in the past.
Disorderly conduct/trespassing
? Berwyn resident Ronald J. Schaefer, 24, was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass after police were called to a home in the 3200 block of Prairie Avenue, Brookfield, twice on July 1. The arrests came two days after Schaefer had reportedly called Brookfield police to let them know he was going to the residence to get his fiance out of the house. Brookfield police responded that he should not go there.
On July 1, police received a call from a resident who said a man, later identified as Schaefer, threw a pipe through the window of a neighboring house. Police responded to the scene and interviewed the home owner and a woman who reported to police that Schaefer was banging on doors and windows and yelling. They also reported that Schaefer threw a pipe through the back window of the house and that the home’s owner sprayed him with mace.
Schaefer was apprehended walking southbound on Prairie Avenue away from the scene. He allegedly told police he only wanted to talk to his fiance, and said he only threw the pipe to prevent the homeowner from spraying him with mace.
Schaefer was arrested for disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property and posted bond, Later that same day, police were called back to the residence after Schaeffer returned and resumed banging on windows and yelling. This time, police reportedly found him on the south side of the house and charged him with criminal trespass.
Underage drinking party
? Brookfield police cited 14 teenagers from Brookfield, North Riverside, Riverside and LaGrange Park for illegal possession of alcohol by a minor after responding to a complaint of an underage drinking party just after midnight on July 3 in the 3300 block of Elm Avenue.
Police arrived to find a half-empty bottle of whiskey, a keg of beer and several unopened bottles of beer in the rear yard and garage of the home, whose owners were out of town.
Burglary
? Someone broke open a locked cab on the back of a green Dodge Dakota pick-up truck in the 3900 block of Sunnyside Avenue, Brookfield, and stole a gym bag sometime between June 29 and July 5. The owner of the truck said the bag contained approximately $300 worth of merchandise, including CDs, DVDs, a cell phone charger, a satellite antenna and a book of checks.
Vehicle theft
? Sometime during the overnight hours of July 3-4, someone stole a beige 1993 Infiniti G20 with 17-inch chrome wheels that was parked in the 3100 block of Oak Ave., Brookfield. According to the vehicle’s owner, the doors were locked but the sunroof may have been left open slightly.
The above information was obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside and Brookfield police departments from July 1 through July 10 and represents a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
