Dean L. Wittenberg, 69, of Brookfield, died on Sept. 8, 2017.

Born on April 9, 1948 in Chicago to the late William C. and Marilyn Wittenberg, he was an educator, storyteller, history aficionado and a model train enthusiast.

Mr. Wittenberg spent the majority of his career working for the Chicago Public Schools where he was a librarian and history teacher at Dunbar Vocational High School.

He was a faithful member of St. Louise de Marillac Parish, where he was actively involved with the Men's Club. He served on the board of the Brookfield Public Library for several years, coached Brookfield National Little League and served as a Scout leader for Troop 111.

Ever the handyman, he enjoyed numerous annual trips to Clarksdale, Mississippi doing volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity. His heart belonged to his grandchildren who he loved to make laugh and who always made him laugh in return.

Mr. Wittenberg is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his children, Amy (Christopher) Moravec and Michael (Angela) Wittenberg; his grandchildren, Henry and Milo Wittenberg and Charlotte and Ellenore Moravec; his brother, William (Geri) Wittenberg; and his several nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Hitzeman Funeral Home, 9445 31st St. in Brookfield. Funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. on Sept. 14 at St. Louise de Marillac Catholic Church, 1144 Harrison Ave. in La Grange Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates memorial contributions to Misericordia, 6300 N. Ridge Ave., Chicago, 60611. Please indicate "MFA3266" on the memo line if donating via check.
