The Riverside-Brookfield High School boys cross country team dominated its own RB Invitational by placing the top four runners at Sundown Meadows in LaGrange over the weekend.

RBHS senior Jack Sagan won the individual title with a time of 16 minutes, 18.8 seconds, while teammates Jacob Wardzala (16:37.1), Connor O'Brien (16:38.2) and Jason Noel (16:58.1) finished second through fourth.

The Bulldogs scored 19 points to comfortably defeat runner-up Morton (80), Elmwood Park (90), Fenwick (103) and Nazareth (119).

Other top 20 runners for RBHS included Ryan Hahn (9th place/17:39.5), Chris Magno (15th/18:01.8) and David Keen (17th/18:05.4).

On the girls side, RBHS earned fourth place with a score of 78. Whitney Young (46) won the invite, followed by Fenwick (61) and Glenbard North (68).

Senior Hailey Jurgens led the Bulldogs with a time of 20:03.8 to place eighth. Nadia Kaczmarz (11th/20:28.1), Cora Lutes (16th/21:03.7) and Niela Callanan (18th/21:10/4) also ran well for RBHS.

Glenbard North's Eleltay Sista recorded a time of 19:22.6 to win the race.

RBHS girls swimming

Madeline Wenig is making quite a name for herself in the swimming pool. The Riverside-Brookfield freshman won the 200-yard individual medley and placed second in the 100 breaststroke at the RB Invite over the weekend.

Wenig set a pair of new RBHS varsity records in the 200 IM (2 minutes, 12.04 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.05).

The Bulldogs finished fifth out of the 10-team field.

Chloe Marello recorded personal best times in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle races en route to a pair of seventh-place showings.

Notable RBHS relays included the medley quartet of Alyssa Schwarz, Wenig, Veronica Cariveau and Claire Kawiecki and the 400 freestyle relay of Kawieck, Autumn Schwer, Wenig and Cariveau, which each recorded a top 6 finish.

Abby Regan and Nicky O'Keefe came in fourth and fifth, respectively, in diving. Kawiecki earned fifth in the 100-yard butterfly, Cariveau sixth in the 100 fly and Sarah Strubbe sixth in the 100-yard backstroke.

RBHS competes in the York Invite on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 5:30 p.m.

Fenwick football

Fenwick earned a hard-fought 28-0 win against visiting Leo on Friday, Sept. 15 at Triton College in River Grove.

"I'm happy to win," Fenwick coach Gene Nudo said. "Leo is an athletic team that plays everyone tough. (Head coach) Michael Holmes does a great job."

Initially, it looked like it might be a quick night for Fenwick which scored touchdowns on its first three possessions.

The Friars received the opening kickoff and went on a 7-play, 80-yard march that was capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Danny Cronin (11-for-19, 99 yards, TD) to senior wide receiver Michael O'Laughlin. Bryan Dowd added the extra point to give the Friars a 7-0 lead just over three minutes into the first quarter.

After the defense forced the Lions into a quick three-and-out, Jack Polston had a nifty punt return, setting the Friars up with great field position at the Leo 33. Three plays later, Nick Tolimieri scored on a 15-yard run. Dowd's kick made it 14-0 with 5:15 remaining in the opening quarter.

Another Friars' defensive stop led to another Leo punt, which Polston returned 55 yards on an electrifying return to the Lions' 26. Two plays later, senior running back Jason Ivery (23 carries, 164 yards, 2 TD) took it to the house from 15 yards out, extending the lead to 21-0 with 30 seconds left in the first quarter.

George Lagios took over for Cronin under center with 10:27 left in the fourth quarter. He engineered a 12-play, 78-yard drive that ended with Ivery going into the end zone from a yard out to raise the score to 28-0 with 5:55 left.
