Brookfield said its final farewell to local legend Roy Overholt this morning at his funeral at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

But it was on Thursday night that the village and the baseball league to which Overholt had devoted a half century paid a unique tribute.

With the village's blessing, at 3 p.m. — at the start of Overholt's wake over at Johnson Funeral Home a couple of blocks away — the Brookfield National Little League flipped the switch on the lights over at Roy A. Overholt Field at Kiwanis Park.

As darkness fell, the lights illuminated the snow-covered diamond throughout the time of the wake. The league also placed a banner on a backstop, which reads: "Thank you for making our Field of Dreams. We will miss you!"

According to Little League President Joann Ogden-D'Altorio, the banner will stay up through the weekend, after which it will be given to Overholt's widow, Audrey.

Overholt, whose eponymous baseball tournament held at the field named in his honor celebrated its 50th year in August, died Dec. 8 at the age of 89.

Ogden-D'Altorio said the Little League plans to honor the Overholt family at its opening day ceremony on April 27, 2014.
