Woman who slipped at dolphin show sues zoo
Seeks more than $50,000 in damages

A
Chicago woman on Tuesday filed suit against Brookfield Zoo claiming she was injured after she slipped and fell on a wet walkway at a dolphin show at the zoo in August 2008. The plaintiff, Allecyn Edwards, is seeking more than $50,000 in damages for her injuries.

According to the lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court on Aug. 18, Edwards visited the zoo on
Aug. 20, 2008, and attended one of the dolphin shows. While walking in the bleacher section of the exhibit area, Edwards fell and sustained injuries not specified in the lawsuit.

Calls to Edwards and to her attorney were not immediately returned. A spokeswoman for Brookfield Zoo declined to comment on the suit citing pending litigation.

Since 2000, Brookfield Zoo has been sued five other times for personal injury or premises liability. All of those cases were dismissed, according to records on file with the clerk of the court for
Cook County.

In this latest lawsuit, Edwards alleges that the zoo was negligent in "recklessly and willfully" training its dolphins to splash water at spectators and onto the walkways, not warning spectators to beware of the slippery floor and not providing slip-proof mats or strips for spectator safety.

The suit claims Edwards suffered injuries that caused her to miss time from work and to experience pain, suffering and physical and emotional trauma.

This ranks right up there with the woman who stuck her hand in the wolf enclosure to "pet" a wild animal, only to have part of her hand chewed off, and the wolf put down.

When did society become so litigious, and when did people become so stupid??

I hope the judge throws this out of court IMMEDIATELY, and this woman is handed a bill for wasting the court's time.

Its called the Dolphin show, not the African habitat. I have no pity for her, she now knows that Dolphins live in water.

Now that she learned this valuable lesson, maybe she could understand that suing your way out of your mistakes is not the answer.

Allecyn Edwards is the problem, not the zoo and everyone knows it! But don't worry about raising rates at the zoo, the insurance company will likely settle, this ridiculous case will never go to court. That means another member of society takes zero responsibility for their own actions and blames everyone else for their careless and dimwitted errors of judgment.

Wet floors are slippery? REALLY? YOU NEED A SIGN FOR THAT? The dolphin show "may" have water and as we watch it hit the floor, we all MIGHT need to be careful while walking? Wait a tic…This isn’t Mercury? Someone better get Shamoo a lawyer!

What other signs might we start seeing? “If you keep your hand in a closing door, you may get your fingers smashed”.

Seriously, what is wrong with people? I can’t articulate everything I am thinking, this story is too upsetting with all that we deal with in our general daily lives. I truly hope this goes to court because I want to visit the Chicago area for the new book I am writing called “Allecy Edwards visits the Zoo, D’OH!”

I know its legal, but I am so tired of people suing organizations for their own lack of common sense. C'mon its the dolphin show not the iguana exhibit, of course there will be water for you to watch out for.
