A man found dead of a stab wound inside a North Riverside home last night inflicted the wound himself, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
North Riverside Police Chief Anthony Garvey reported that the medical examiner came to that conclusion during an autopsy performed this morning on the 62-year-old man, who had suffered a stab wound to the chest. Police recovered a knife at the scene, Garvey said.
"The medical examiner feels that it's consistent with a self-inflicted stab wound," Garvey said.
Police received a 911 call from the man's wife at about 7:20 p.m. Nov. 24, said Garvey. When police and paramedics arrived, the man was already dead.
There were no signs of forced entry to the couple's apartment on the 7700 block of 26th Street, and police felt there was not enough information to make a determination on whether the man had been murdered.
At least one Chicago news organization ran a headline indicating the man was a homicide victim. North Riverside has not had a homicide since 1990.
"There was just not enough information last night to determine the cause either way," Garvey said. "With the medical examiner's report, we were hoping to narrow the scope of the investigation."
Garvey said that police will continue their investigation, but have no reason to doubt the medical examiner's ruling of a suicide, Garvey said.
