RBHS notes
The RB student who was caught with a small knife in his shoe in the RB student parking lot in December was not expelled from RB and will be allowed to finish the school year if he adheres to a strict set of conditions.
After a closed-door hearing in January the District 208 school board voted 6-0 not to expel the student, but rather to allow him back in school under stringent conditions.
Under the conditions of the resolution agreed to by the school board and the student the student is subject to random searches by the RB administration, must check in and check out with school authorities at the beginning and end of each school day, can have no unexcused absences, tardies or cuts and can have no Level III violations of student disciplinary code. The resolution also states that the student may not discuss his case with anyone.
If the student violates any of these conditions he can be immediately expelled for the remainder of the school year.
Segways nixed for RBHS
In other RB news, Interim Superintendent David Bonnette said the school has decided not to purchase any Segway personal transportation devices. One of the two wheeled battery powered devices was given to the school free of charge for a brief trial period in September. The Segway was used by Assistant Principal John Passarella, and the administration was testing whether Segways could be useful for RB's security team.
Bonnette said that the Segway, which costs a little more than $5,000, did have some advantages and could prove useful but, given RB's dire financial situation, the school just cannot afford to buy a Segway this year.
"It's something that I would classify as a bit of luxury right now," Bonnette said.
