A dog's life, up close and personal
KOSEY CORNER
You've seen the ads - the lonesome-looking dog with the soulful eyes tugging at your heartstrings to adopt him, or the commercial with a country singer looking to you to "save" the animal cuddled in her lap.

Rooting out talent, giving them a shot
KOSEY CORNER
Growing up his life was all baseball, school and friends, but primarily baseball. If he wasn't playing the game he was watching a game somewhere, professional or otherwise. Time goes by and North Riverside resident Sam Hall still enjoys baseball, but his interests have expanded.

Stocking up for another school year
KOSEY CORNER
Time for the annual back-to-school column. I always enjoy writing this column, possibly because I am not the one going back to school. I know you are never to old to learn, but now that happens for me on a less structured basis - no need for the No. 2 pencil, the folders, the markers, college- or wide-ruled paper, the box of crayons, etc.

Not your ordinary summer vacation
KOSEY CORNER
And how did you spend your summer vacation, Chris Halline? From one whose summer vacation as a kid consisted of going to my godparents' farm in Berrien Springs, Mich., Halline's summer had more miles and exciting times than going to the chicken coop to pick up fresh eggs, which were still warm and not always the cleanest.

More than just a trip to the store
KOSEY CORNER
It could be billed as Tuesday at Tischler's but it is really part of a new shopping program put together by PeopleCare, an agency located in Riverside that supports and gives assistance to homebound elderly residents of the area.

Planning reunion, getting sidetracked
When reunion committees get together for planning such events, it is inevitable that conversation drifts to remembering people, places and things and tends to take over from the business at hand. The reunion committee for the class of 1960 from Riverside-Brookfield High School, who are celebrating their 50-year reunion in September, is no different.

Monsoons, no. Hangers, yes, please
KOSEY CORNER
The monsoon season is still on in our area, and this time we were not so lucky - seepage first and then the sump pump decided it needed a rest, bad sump pump.

More than just a Big Ball Park
Time for a little nostalgia trip as a recent event held at the Big Ball Park in Riverside brought to mind just how many things have gone on in the park. While it is called the Big Ball Park (and how it came to be known by that name eludes me), the most obvious would be the number of "ball" games that have been played there.

Riverside's Leander determined to run
KOSEY CORNER
He rounds the corner, running with abandon. He is in a zone, oblivious to the other runners, but his determination is obvious to the crowd watching the race - as well as Owen Leander's short stature and the curly, strawberry-blond hair shaking in the wind.

Good riddance to June's monsoon
KOSEY CORNER
Prior to last week's column I was asked by people if I had written about the monsoon - rain, torrent or whatever you choose to call it. I replied that I had not, preferring to go with the more timely and upbeat subject of July 4. I knew the Landmark would handle it more than adequately, which it did, complete with pictures.

Riverside, this Fourth's for you
KOSEY CORNER
When an idea is brought to fruition it is a good thing, that is presuming the idea is a good one. And this time it was. It took just a small firecracker of a start to have it boom into a traditional July 4 celebration for the village of Riverside.

A small, prayerful bid for peace
KOSEY CORNER
It has been almost two years since a group of people called the Riverside-North Riverside Covenant of Churches gathered to discuss just what they could do as a group to help promote peace in the world.

Wiaduck named new Lions president
KOSEY CORNER
The Riverside Township Lions Club welcomed its new president, Jack Wiaduck, recently, when the gavel was passed to him by outgoing President Jon Jansky, whose late father, Bill Jansky, had also been president of the organization. Wiaduck is the former president of the village of Riverside.
