Gloria M. Urban, 70, former assembly line worker
Gloria M. Urban (nee Melka), a Brookfield resident, died Feb. 9, 2005 at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn at the age of 70.

Born in Chicago on May 21, 1934 to James and Hazel Melka, she later married Richard A. Urban, who preceded his wife in death. Prior to her retirement, she worked as an assembly line worker at a manufacturing company. She was also an active member of the Harrah’s Diamond Club.

A funeral service, officiated by Pastor Gary Olson, was held Feb. 11 at Hitzeman Funeral Home, Brookfield, followed by cremation at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park.

Ms. Urban was preceded in death by her sons, Richard Urban II, Robert P. Urban of Brookfield and Ronald (Angie) Urban; and a grandchild, Marshall Urban. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Donald (the late Edna) Melka.

Ferne R. Kranzkowsky, 86, former Brookfield resident
Ferne R. Kranzkowsky (nee Mroch), 86, an Oswego resident who formerly lived in Brookfield, died Feb. 12, 2005 at Willow Crest Nursing Home in Sandwich.

Born Ferne Mroch in Chicago on Aug. 31, 1918 to Rudolph and Marie (nee Reppin) Mroch, she married Herman T. Kranzkowsky, who preceded his wife in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Gilbert Mroch; and her sisters, Geraldine (Elmer) Haick and Grace Mroch.

She is survived by her niece, Kathleen Ziemer of Oswego and her nephew, Howard Haick.

A funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Walter Otten, was held Feb. 15 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Brookfield, followed by interment in Concordia Cemetery, Forest Park.

Garfield L. Petranek, 83, retired truck driver, Riverside resident
Garfield L. Petranek, a Riverside resident, died Feb. 17, 2004 at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn. He was 83.

Mr. Petranek was a U.S. Army veteran, who served during World War II. He was a member of the Cicero American Legion Post 96. He worked as a truck driver and was a member of Teamsters Union Local 705.

He is survived by his wife, Irene (nee Hardy) Petranek; his daughter, Barbara (Robert) Hornung; his son, Gary (Mary) Petranek; and his granddaughter, Madeline Petranek.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated this morning, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 125 Herrick Road, Riverside.

Ruth C. Sikora, 90, former Brookfield resident
Ruth C. Sikora (nee Marose), 90, a former resident of Countryside and Brookfield, died Feb. 13, 2005 at her home in Downers Grove.

Born Aug. 27, 1914 in Chicago to Fritz and Katherine Marose, she was a homemaker, raising two children. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her daughter, Ruth (Gregory) Hylton. She is survived by her son, Michael Sikora of Downers Grove and her grandchildren, Mark and Michael Hylton.

A funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Mark Jargstorf, was held Feb. 16 at Hitzeman Funeral Home, Brookfield, followed by interment in Fairmount Willow Hills Cemetery in Willow Springs.

A memorial Mass for the Rev. Robert McLaughlin has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 24, at Mater Christi Church, 2431 10th Ave. in North Riverside.

Associate pastor at Mater Christi from 1976-81, McLaughlin died Jan. 24 from an apparent heart attack at the age of 64.

A popular priest wherever he served, McLaughlin was pastor of Mary, Seat of Wisdom Parish in Park Ridge at the time of his death.

He began his ministry in the priesthood in 1966 as an associate pastor at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, a position he held for 10 years. He would later serve as pastor at the cathedral from 1990-2002.

In between, he served as the associate pastor at Mater Christi and as pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Chicago (1981-84) before his appointment in 1984 as rector-president of Niles College of Loyola University, the Archdiocese of Chicago’s college level seminary.
