A Riverside patrolman suffered minor bruising to his shoulder, but was back on duty Monday afternoon after his squad car spun out of control and crashed into a concrete light pole near the intersection of 31st Street and Desplaines Avenue Monday morning.

Just before 8:30 a.m., Officer Dan Marrello was responding to a traffic accident at 27th Street and Desplaines Avenue when he lost control of his car, which fishtailed and then spun around completely and into the light pole. The pole then landed on top of the Ford Crown Victoria he was driving.

Riverside Fire Department personnel worked to extricate Marrello from the car, and he was transported to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and released. According to Assistant Police Chief Thomas Weitzel, the squad car was completely totaled.

Police are reviewing videotapes from another squad car that was following Marrello to the scene to determine what caused the officer to lose control of the vehicle. Marrello was hired as a patrolman by the Riverside Police Department in May 2003.
