Carroll R. Cihlar, 75, journalist

Carroll Ronald Cihlar, 75, a resident of Brookfield who formerly lived in North Riverside, died June 18, 2005 at Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Hospital.

Mr. Cihlar was born in Chicago on Oct. 24, 1929 to Julia and Orloff Edward Cihlar Sr. He served in the U.S. Army and was employed as a journalist. He is survived by his son, Kevin O. Cihlar; his daughter, Heather Schijf; and his two brothers, Phillip and Orloff Cihlar. Funeral services and burial were private.

Josephine B. Hobart, 88, Brookfield homemaker

Josephine B. Hobart (nee Mensik), 88, a Brookfield resident and homemaker, died June 21, 2005 at LaGrange Memorial Hospital.

Born in Ennis, Texas to Stephen and Blanche Mensik on Feb. 4, 1917, Ms. Hobart was one of four daughters. She later married Anton F. Hobart, who preceded his wife in death.

She was active in many local groups, including the St. Louise Friendship Club, the St. Barbara Seniors, St. Francis Seniors, the 1st Czech Garden Club and the Royal Neighbors.

Ms. Hobart is survived by her daughters, Josephine (Mark) Kummerow and Blanche Hobart; four grandchildren, Mark Kummerow, Gayle Kummerow, Jody Cote and Terry Adams; three great grandchildren, Tony Kummerow, Jimmy Cote and Eric Cote; and her sisters, Frances (the late Joe) Tehle and Georgianna (the late Don) Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Ann (the late Joseph) Sitar.

Memorial contribution were appreciated to the St. Louise de Marillac Church Parish Center Fund, 1144 Harrison Ave., LaGrange Park, Ill. 60526 or a favorite charity.

Joanne Stefka, 88 nurse’s assistant

Joanne Stefka (nee Podgorski), 88, a North Riverside resident who worked as a nurse’s assistant, died June 18, 2005 at her home.

Ms. Stefka was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, and is survived by her daughters, Barbara Duszynski, Dianne Trottier, Connie Snyder and Anne Rosenfeld; her sons, Frank, John and Dennis Stefka; her sisters, Emily Wallewski and Lottie Halvaty; her brother, Chester Podgorski; 22 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on June 21 at St. Leonard Church in Berwyn, followed by interment in Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery, Hillside.

Memorial contributions were appreciated to the American Cancer Society or to MacNeal Hospice.

Morgan M. Strand, 38, riverside attorney

Morgan M. Strand (nee Milne), 38, a Riverside resident who worked as an attorney in downtown Chicago, died June 22, 2005 from injuries sustained after being struck by a train at Harlem Avenue and the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railroad tracks on June 21.

Ms. Strand was born in Oak Park to John and Florence Milne. The family later moved to Sarasota, Fla., where she grew up. She attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala. and later earned a law degree from the Loyola University School of Law in Chicago.

After attaining her law degree, she worked for a time as a clerk to Illinois Supreme Court Justice Michael J. Bilandic, formerly mayor of the City of Chicago, whom she assisted on cases in both the Illinois Appellate and Illinois Supreme courts.

At the time of her death, Ms. Strand was an attorney with the law firm of Cassiday, Schade and Gloor, specializing in appellate law. She also enjoyed reading and gardening.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Strand is survived by her husband, Jeffrey; her children, Emma and Jake; her siblings, Margaret (Jim) Rynne, Kathy (Keith) Long, Eileen (Rick) Rann, Lorry (Jeff) LaGreca, Michael (Jeanette) Milne and Patrick (Georgina) Milne; her brothers-in-law, Ryan (Sherri) Strand and Craig (Laura) Strand; her sister-in-law, Jennifer Strand; her nieces and nephews, Jonathan Rynne, Kirk Long, Kris Long, Claire Rann, Tim Rann, Matt Milne, Andrew Milne, Riley Milne, Wyatt Milne, Jessica Strand, Tyler Strand, Dylan Strand and Ashton Strand; and her mother- and father-in-law, Stanley and Jackie Strand.

A funeral service was held June 25 at Riverside Presbyterian Church. Contributions were appreciated in memory of Morgan Strand, c/o Creative World Motessori School, 1250 W. Goodman, laGrange, Ill. 60525.
