The Riverside-Brookfield High School Cheerleading squad recently completed their seventh year attending National Cheerleaders Association summer camps. The JV cheerleaders hosted a private, home camp while the varsity squad attended the camp held at Illinois Wesleyan University where they were pitted against 13 other schools.
The RB cheerleaders received the following awards. The varsity squad earned a bid to compete at Nationals in Dallas, the world’s largest cheerleading event bringing in over 20,000 cheerleaders. Teams who received a national bid exhibited the best technical skill and cheerleading technique.
Thirteen members were nominated for All-American status, including Shannon Deady, Kathleen Fulton, Emily Gryglak, Josh Pierce, Victoria Din, Ashley Kordat, Brittany Schuppe, Elizabeth Seibert, Ashley Valadez, Kelsey Kesman, Rachael Recht, Cassandra Shugailo and Lisa Passarella.
In addition, Shugailo, Recht and Gryglak, along with JV team members Sarah Johnson, Samantha Cavaliere, Nicollete Sabatino, Katie Deveraux and Mariah Peterson were recognized for displaying strength in cheer motions and technique, leadership ability and/or overall attitude at camp, jumps, stunting, or tumbling and have been invited to tryout for a position on a performance team at a college football bowl game.
Several other individuals were recognized in other areas. Deady received the Excellence in Leadership Award for displaying the strongest leadership skills. Meanwhile, RB cheerleaders also received Top Gun Awards, recognizing the top individuals in tumbling, stunting, dance and jumps. Recht was a finalist in the Top Gun tumbling competition, Kordat was runner-up in Top Gun dance, and Shugailo was named Top Gun jumper.
The RB team also garnered the Top Team Award, a first for the high school.
