A 24-year-old Lyons man reported that he was robbed by two men who jumped out of a car just before midnight on Sept. 13 at the corner of Raymond and Ogden avenues in Brookfield.
According to the report, the victim was walking across the street when a midnight blue Chevy Impala SS turned south onto Raymond Avenue from Ogden and stopped near him. Two men exited the vehicle from the rear seat, approached the victim and told him he was being robbed. The first offender was described as a black male, 5-10, medium build with braided hair and wearing a black T-shirt, black jeans and black gym shoes. The second offender was described as a Hispanic male, 5-7, with a tattoo of Chinese letters on his left forearm. His head was shaved and he wore a white T-shirt, black jeans and white gym shoes.
The first offender grabbed the victim in a choke hold from behind while the second offender searched the victim’s pants pockets and tore a gold chain from his neck. The two men then jumped back into the car, which was driven by a female and contained a female front seat passenger, and fled.
Burglary/attempted burglary
Lyons resident Allen Derby, 24, was charged with attempted burglary, a felony, after he allegedly tried to break into a home in the 2200 block of Burr Oak Avenue, North Riverside, just after noon on Sept. 12. According to police, Derby tried to gain entrance through a basement window by cutting the screen, but was frightened away by the homeowner who was in the basement at the time. Derby fled on a bicycle and was apprehended by police a short time later. In addition to attempted burglary, he was also charged with criminal damage to property.
? Between 4 and 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 13, someone entered an apartment in the 3400 block of Grand Boulevard, Brookfield, and stole a mini I-Pod, Sony Diskman, Sony digital camera, Olympus 35mm camera, clothes, 15-20 CDs, and a pair of platinum earrings. Total loss was valued at over $720.
? Someone entered a garage in the 4100 block of Elm Avenue, Brookfield, between Sept. 10-12 and removed a Ryobi table saw and a Ryobi 10-inch mitre saw. Total value of the loss was estimated at $250.
? During the overnight hours of Sept. 12-13, someone entered a garage currently under construction and missing a door in the 9100 block of Sherman Avenue, Brookfield, and removed a Bostitch nail gun valued at $400 and a Kmart scroll saw valued at $200.
? During the overnight hours of Sept. 13-14, someone entered a garage in the 9000 block of Southview Avenue, Brookfield, and removed a Porter cable compressor, a canvas bag with assorted hand tools and an unknown amount of change from a 2000 Jeep Cherokee parked inside.
? During the overnight hours of Sept. 13-14, someone entered a garage in the 3900 block of Maple Avenue, Brookfield, and removed a 10-inch Ryobi mitre saw and $20 in coins from the ashtray of a 2002 Mazda parked inside.
? During the overnight hours of Sept. 15-16, someone entered an unlocked garage in the 3900 block of Maple Avenue and removed a 13-inch color TV, a Sprayit portable air compressor, an air stapler and air nail gun.
? A resident of the 4500 block of Deyo Avenue reported on Sept. 17 that someone had entered the garage and stole a Coleman compressor ($100) and compressor impact gun ($50).
Auto theft
Three vehicles were reported stolen in Brookfield last week. On Sept. 14, a man who had been on vacation since Sept. 8 reported that his dark blue/gray 1987 Chevy Suburban was missing from the rear of a property in the 9100 block of Ogden Avenue. Police learned that Chicago police had reported the vehicle towed and impounded on Sept. 12.
A resident of the 4000 block of Maple Avenue reported that a white 1994 Pontiac Sunbird was stolen from in front of the home. The victim stated that the car doors were unlocked and an extra key was kept in the center console.
Meanwhile, on Sept. 18 a resident of the 4200 block of Oak Avenue reported that after hearing some “scraping” sounds coming from the driveway at around 5:15 a.m., he looked out the window to find that a 1997 Mercedes Benz S420 was missing. The victim was unsure if the car doors were locked, and added that a spare set of keys was kept in the center console.
DUI
Lyons resident Thomas M. Klaric, 44, was charged with driving under the influence and other traffic offenses by Brookfield police after an officer reported that Klaric’s 1995 Buick drove through a stop sign at Maple Avenue and the Memorial Circle and then traveled south on Grand Boulevard in the northbound lane for 75 feet at 12:45 a.m. on Sept. 14. He failed field sobriety tests and a breath test revealed a blood-alcohol level of .187, over twice the legal limit.
? Riverside police charged Ricardo Garcia, 30, with DUI and other traffic offenses after being stooped for speeding southbound on Harlem Avenue near Longcommon Road at 1:49 a.m. on Sept. 17. Police reported that Garcia admitted drinking and recovered an open bottle of beer from a cupholder in his vehicle. A breath test revealed a blood-alcohol level of .12.
? Brookfield police charged Chicago resident Ruben Nevarez, 29, with DUI and multiple traffic offenses after begin stopped for speeding in the 9100 block of Ogden Avenue at 12:28 a.m. on Sept. 18. Police reported that Nevarez appeared incoherent and admitted drinking seven beers.
These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments from Sept. 10 through Sept. 18 and represents a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
