A 41-year-old Berwyn man was charged with domestic battery, a 25-year-old Berwyn woman was charged with endangering the life of a child and a 5-month-old infant is in his grandmother’s custody after Riverside police responded to the scene of an alleged domestic incident in the 3500 block of Harlem Avenue on the morning of Nov. 26.

According to the report, Riverside police received several 911 calls of a man and woman fighting outside a vehicle on Harlem Avenue just before 11:30 a.m. One witness stated that the two adults were screaming at each other and shoving each other in the street and that the man was throwing bags out of the red Ford Explorer. The woman attempted to get back in the vehicle’s rear passenger-side door but the man took off while the door was still open allegedly running over the woman’s foot.

Police eventually caught up with the pair, James T. Rodden and Melissa A. Sides, in the drive-thru lanes of the Standard Bank on the southwest corner of Ogden and Harlem avenues. Rodden was taken into custody and transported to the Riverside police station. He later reportedly tried to strangle himself with a sweatshirt while in the lockup there and was taken to MacNeal Hospital.

Sides, whom police described as showing signs of intoxication, initially said the man had thrown their 5-month-old son out the window of the car, but later recanted that story. The child exhibited no signs of trauma. Sides was taken to MacNeal Hospital for treatment, where she was allegedly uncooperative, passing out at one point and refusing to sign a complaint against Rodden. Police charged her for endangering the life of a child due to her alleged intoxication.

Rodden was initially cited for violation of an order of protection. That charge was later dropped and changed to a violation of parole, relating to a previous aggravated domestic battery conviction.

Disorderly conduct

? Riverside police charged Summit resident Fabian Velandia, 24, with disorderly conduct after a 50-year-old Berwyn woman called 911 at 12:07 p.m. on Nov. 22 to report he was following her.

According to the woman, she noticed Velandia as she entered her car near her Berwyn home. After zigzagging through Berwyn, she stopped at a stop sign on East Burlington Street and noticed Velandia in a car behind her, smiling.

The woman pulled into the parking lot of the Riverside Post Office, 45 E. Burlington St. and said that Velandia pulled in behind her. That prompted her to call 911. While talking with the dispatcher, the woman told police that Velandia walked over to her car and knocked on the window.

When she didn’t respond Velandia walked back to his car; police arrived at that moment.

Velandia allegedly told police he wasn’t following the woman and had driven to the bank to use the ATM machine, despite not being able to produce an ATM card for police.

Drug offense

? North Riverside police charged two Chicago men with possession of cannabis after security personnel watching via surveillance cameras at Sears in the North Riverside Park Mall, 7500 Cermak Road, reported the two rolling what looked to be a cigar-sized marijuana blunt outside the store’s package pickup doors on Nov. 20.

Police responded to the scene and arrested Lance C. Harris, 17, and Brandon L. Harris, 19, confiscating the blunt. A field test showed the green leafy substance to be roughly 2 grams of cannabis. In addition, Lance Harris, who was sitting in the driver’s seat, was cited for possessing no valid license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments from Nov. 20 through Nov. 27 and which represents a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
