The Lyons Township baseball team crushed Mt. Carmel 12-2 to win the Crestwood 1 Super-sectional on Monday and advance to the Class AA State tournament at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva this weekend.
The Lions (34-6) led 6-2 by the second inning. Justin Birks (4-for-5) upped the lead by two runs with a homer in the fourth.
James Murrey went the distance for the Lions. The senior right-hander allowed just four hits in the game.
On Saturday, the Lions downed St. Rita 11-6 to win the Nazareth Sectional championship. LT scored five runs in the first 2 innings of action. Casey McMurray and Birks both belted homers in the first inning. McMurray nailed a two-run shot, while Birks was a solo performance.
LT scored four more runs in the third inning. Mark Hockberg had a two-run single, and Luke Gacek a two-run double. Brian Dunne hit a solo homer to lead off the fourth and added to LT’s lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Dan Weston got the win for LT, allowing three earned runs on four hits and seven walks in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
The Lions take on O’Fallon in the second game of the state quarterfinal on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
