The Riverside Bandits, made up of 9- and 10-year-olds, won their district and advanced to regionals. The girls won their last game against Stickney 10-4 in South Cicero. The team was given a police escort back into town after the win.
Soto wins silver
Shelby Soto, 14, a student of SMA Tai Kwon Do in Riverside, won a silver medal at the AAU Tai Kwon Do Nationals in Knoxville, Tenn., over the fourth of July weekend.
Soto, a first degree blackbelt, went 2-1 in her bouts. Back in April, she took first place at the regionals in Wisconsin. Soto will soon compete in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for a chance to be on the AAU National team.
