Evadna J. Dennis, 81, Brookfield homemaker
Evadna J. Dennis (nee Coburn), 81, died at her home in Brookfield on July 24, 2006.

Born in Arthur, Ill. on Jan. 31, 1925 to John and Golda Coburn, she was one of seven children. She later married Charles Henry Dennis and raised two daughters. Mr. Dennis preceded his wife in death.

She is survived by her daughters, Cindy S. (Walter) Onysio and Tricia A. (Eric) Wahlstrom; her grandchildren, Amanda Onysio, Bobby Onysio, Carl Wahlstrom and Anna Wahlstrom; her sisters, Aline Jeffers, Marjorie (Ernest) Gunser and Marilyn (Harry) Kasch; her brother, Warren (Mary) Coburn; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Newberry, and her brother, Bob Coburn.

A funeral service was held July 28 at Hitzeman Funeral Home, Brookfield, followed by interment at Chapel Hill Gardens South, Oak Lawn.

Grant R. Feye, 62, Retired salesman
Riverside resident Grant Richard “Rich” Feye, died July 28, 2006 at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. He was 62 years old.

A retired salesman who worked for a paper supply company, Mr. Feye is survived by his wife, Kathleen (nee Fisher) Feye; his stepchildren, Diana (Rico) Sims, Elizabeth (Rick) Rodriguez, Jennifer (Dan) Bigeck and John (Sara) Keefer Jr.; his grandchildren, John, Rebecca, Amber, Quinn and Dominick; his nephew, Bill (Chery) Stoll Jr.; his sister-in-law, Mary Rose Fisher; his brother-in-law, Jack (Mary) Ahern; his godson, Nicholas Isdale; and many cousins and friends.

A funeral service was held July 31 at Kuratko Funeral Home, North Riverside. Memorial contributions were appreciated to a favorite charity.

Milton Gawelczyk, 82, Retired truck driver
Milton Gawelczyk, 82, who lived in Brookfield for 54 years, died July 23, 2006 at his home in that village.

A veteran of World War II, who served in the U.S. Army’s 28th Infantry Division, Mr. Gawelczyk moved to Brookfield in 1952. For over 30 years, he was a truck driver for the A-M Forge Co. in Blue Island, retiring in 1988. He also enjoyed fishing and was known as a cigar aficionado.

He is survived by his brothers, Raymond and Leon Gawelczyk, and by many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was held July 28 at St. Barbara Church, Brookfield, followed by interment at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Stickney.

Gerald E. Miller Sr., 76, Typesetter
Gerald E. Miller, of Oakbrook and formerly of Brookfield, died July 28, 2006 at Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Hospital in Maywood at the age of 76.

Born Nov. 15, 1929 in Chicago to Joseph G. and Genevieve (nee Curtin) Miller, Mr. Miller served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. A typesetter by profession, Mr. Miller was married to Vivian A. Miller, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents; by his brother, Joseph (Jean) Miller; and his sister, Marilyn (John) Johnson.

Mr. Miller is survived by his daughters, Michelle (Marius) Knudsen and Christine (Richard ) Chaput of Brookfield; his son, Gerald E. (Sherrie) Miller Jr. ; his grandchildren, Melissa Parks, Bridget Chavez, Rene Chavez, Billy Knudsen, Stephanie Knudsen, Jason Miller, Brain Remsik, Megan Bellavia, Richard Chaput Jr. and Danielle Chaput; his great grandchildren, Lucas J. Knudsen, Richard E. Chaput III, Richard H. Worley Jr., Nicholas G. Chavez and Gabriella R. Chavez; his sister, Evelyn (Tom) Cichon; and his brother, John (Terry) Miller.

A funeral service was held Aug. 1 at Mayslake Chapel, Oakbrook, followed by interment at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Hillside.

George F. Sterba, 82, Postal Service employee
Brookfield resident George F. Sterba, 82, died July 21, 2006 at LaGrange Memorial Hospital.

Born in Oak Park to Frank and Agnes (nee Drabec) on May 30, 1924, Mr. Sterba served in the U.S. Navy as a member of the “Seabees”-construction brigades that built air strips and military bases in far flung spots around the globe-during World War II. He married Elaine Fink and worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a supervisor prior to his retirement.

Mr. Sterba is survived by his wife, Elaine Sterba of Brookfield; his sons, Steven (Barbara) Sterba and Warren (Wanda) Sterba; his grandchildren, April Sterba, Samantha Sterba and Naomi Sterba; and his sister, Agnes Pajer.

A funeral service was held July 23 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Riverside, followed by interment at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Stickney.

Elaine E. Sternad, 89, Longtime Carson’s employee
Longtime North Riverside resident Elaine E. Sternad (nee Lesak), 89, formerly of Berwyn, died July 27, 2006 at LaGrange Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 23, 1916 in Chicago to Robert and Bessie Lesak, Ms. Sternad lived in Berwyn for 54 years. She attended Morton East High School in Cicero and served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II.

Ms. Sternad was a retail clerk at Carson Pirie Scott for 15 years at the flagship store on State Street in Chicago’s Loop. Later she spent five years at the company’s store at the North Riverside Park Mall in North Riverside, where she lived for 28 years.

She was also a member of the North Riverside Golden Agers and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Clarence R. Sternad, she is survived by her daughter, Marjorie J. Sternad of Brookfield; her sons, Thomas C. (Nancy) Sternad and Carl J. Sternad; her grandchildren, Brett, Lauren, Jason and Justin; her brother, Roy Lesak; her nieces, Virginia Jakoubek, Barbara Karlin and Lori Lesak; her great nephews, Daniel Jakoubek and Cody Karlin; and her great nieces, Julie Jakoubek and Jesse Karlin.

A funeral Mass, officiated by the Rev. James P. Murphy, was celebrated July 31 at St. Barbara Church, Brookfield, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside.

Virginia M. Sodoma, 88, Brookfield homemaker
Virginia Sodoma (nee Franta), 88, of Brookfield, died July 28, 2006 at LaGrange Memorial Hospital.

She was born March 14, 1918 in Chicago to James and Mary Franta. She married Raymond G. Sodoma and was a homemaker, raising four sons.

She is survived by her husband; her sons, James (Darlene) Sodoma, Raymond F. (Catherine) Sodoma, Steven Sodoma and Mark T. Sodoma; her grandchildren, James Sodoma, Lisa Sodoma and Janice Sodoma; and her brothers, Charles (Mary) Sotir and Robert (the late Claire) Sotir.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her sister, Adele (the late Miles) Lukes.

A funeral Mass was celebrated July 31 at St. Louise de Marillac Church, LaGrange Park, followed in interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside.
