Raptors finish third at regionals

The Brookfield National softball team came up one game short of advancing to the Little League World Series last week. The Raptors finished third in the Central Regional tournament, going 4-2.

The Raptors downed two-time returning state champ Ohio 9-3 in the opening round, then fell to eventual regional champs Michigan 6-0. But the team battled back to defeat Kansas 2-0. Jackie LaManna led off the sixth inning with a double, and Cassandra Cook singled her in. Karin Caithamer, who pitched a two-hitter, knocked in the insurance run on a single.

The Raptors went on to trounce Nebraska 12-0 and Missouri 10-4, advancing into the semifinals where they lost to Kentucky 3-2, despite a 2-0 lead late in the game.

“We named them ‘Lucky Kentucky’,” said Raptors coach Danny Cook. “Things seemed to go their way.”

The Raptors will be honored tonight (7:30 p.m.) at the Roy A. Overholt tournament at Kiwanis Park.
