Margaret Leffer Flood, 73, Retired teacher

Margaret Leffer Flood, 73, of Allen, Texas, died Aug. 9, 2009, in McKinney, Texas. She was born July 12, 1936 in Harrow, England, to Friedrich Wilhelm and Dorothy Olivia (nee Soehrens) Leffer.

She was raised in Riverside and met John Delprat Flood in Illinois. They married June 23, 1956 in Riverside. She and John, along with their three daughters, traveled wherever the United States Air Force sent them.

Ms. Flood volunteered in her daughters’ schools and also in Girl Scouts. She embraced computer science/information technology during the 1970s and later obtained a teaching certificate and a bachelor’s degree in computer technology from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. She was a full-time teacher at the Texas Military Institute in San Antonio.

Ms. Flood retired from teaching and moved to Allen in 2003 with her husband of 53 years. After surviving breast cancer, she became active in the McKinney Cancer Center support group in addition to supporting the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation.

She is survived by her husband, John, of Allen, Texas; her daughters, Janice (Duane) Easterling, Karla Smith and Lori (Harish) Ramani; her grandchildren, Amy Easterling Smith, Marcy Easterling Tozzi, Breeze Smith Strickland, Ginny Easterling, Angel Smith Wilson and Danni Easterling; five great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; her brother, John (Fran) Leffer; and her sister and brother-in-law Ann Ingrid (Bob) Millikan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fritz and Dorothy Leffer, and her brother, Freddy Leffer.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Allen.

Mary P. Hurbanis, 94, Former Riverside resident

Former Riverside resident Mary P. Hurbanis, 94, of Orlando, Fla., died Aug. 3, 2009 at Florida Hospital in Kissimmee.

Ms. Hurbanis was born on Aug. 28, 1914 in Binghampton, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hurbanis, and her daughter, Carol Hurbanis. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Bohemian Chapter.

She is survived by her son, Robert (Ann) Hurbanis, of Orlando; her grandchildren, Robert Hurbanis Jr. and Matthew Hurbanis; and seven great grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Aug. 7 at Sts. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in Riverside, followed by interment at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park.

Leigh A. O’Neal, 43, Research specialist

Leigh Ann O’Neal (nee Soupene), 43, died Aug. 4, 2009 at her home, surrounded by family after a battle with cancer.

Ms. O’Neal was born to William and Macey (nee Young) Soupene in the early morning hours of Dec. 26, 1965 in Englewood, Colo. She graduated from Anamosa High School, in Anamosa, Iowa, in 1984 and attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where she received her bachelor’s degree in education.

She married Kevin O’Neal of West Palm Beach, Fla., on June 11, 1988 in Anamosa and was employed afterward as the associate manager of Fuji Film of America. For the past several years, she was a stay-at-home mom and worked as an information research specialist for the Stuart Spencer company in Chicago.

Ms. O’Neal was an avid artist who excelled in making pottery and she actively involved herself in her children’s schools and activities.

She is survived by her parents; her husband, Kevin O’Neal; her children, Rebecca K. O’Neal and Henry J. O’Neal; and her brothers, Robert (Julie) Soupene, James Soupene and John (Amy) Soupene.

A memorial service celebrating Ms. O’Neal’s life will be held Friday, Aug. 14 at 8 p.m. at Hitzeman Funeral Home, 9445 31st St. in Brookfield. Visitation will be prior to the service, from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at Bronswood Cemetery in Oakbrook.
