Fenwick golf preview
Improving on a 10th-place finish at the Class 3A State Boys Golf Championships last year shouldn’t be a lofty goal for the Fenwick golf team. After all, four of the six players from that stellar squad return this season.

Back to the links are Mike Sullivan, Tim Tynan, Michael Kwasigroch and Bobby Besio. Sullivan, now a senior, finished his final round at state last season with a 79, good for a tie for 51st place. He turned in a 67 as his lowest score during the off-season. Tynan played on varsity as a freshman last season, placing 61st overall. Kwasigroch, who has qualified for state three years straight, and Besio return as experienced seniors.

The Friars also have a new coach in Chris Curran, a certified golf instructor based at Bushwood Golf Practice Center and Golf Range in Maywood. Curran has ties to both OPRF and Fenwick high schools. The coach graduated from OPRF in 1982 and currently has several students that hail from the school. His father is a graduate of Fenwick.

“It’s great to be helping both programs develop in this sport, whether it’s through individual teaching or coaching a team,” said Curran. “This team already has much of it together. I’ve been quite impressed with what I’ve seen.”

New to varsity and expected to see significant course time are junior Vince Mohawk and sophomore Jack Sloan. Mohawk shot an 80 during tryouts last week.

The Friars compete at the Mt. Carmel Invitational on Saturday and take on St. Rita at Fresh Meadows on Aug. 24.

Napletons to lead girls team

Seniors Lauren and Elizabeth Napleton return to lead the Fenwick girls golf team.

The co-captains will be backed by juniors Grace Shannon and Abby Sturwold. Added to the mix are sophomore Kelly Summers and freshmen Elizabeth Mavrogenes and Maggie Grace.
