Riverside public works employees and a Riverside police dispatcher were honored last month by the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad police department for their roles in helping prevent a disastrous situation from occurring in February.

On that date a water main broke along the BNSF line west of First Avenue, washing out tracks on BNSF Main Line 1. The public works employees flagged down two approaching trains, one a Metra passenger train, and stopped them.

They also alerted Riverside police who called the BNSF, stopping all train traffic in that area.

Honored at a lunch at The Chew Chew in Riverside on Aug. 20 were public works employees Kevin Wolter, Anthony Tabb and Kevin Kuratko and police dispatcher Jean Stuczynski.
