Oberholtzer qualifies for state

RB runner returns to course in Peoria

Riverside-Brookfield’s Samantha Oberholtzer will return to Detweiller Park in Peoria to compete in the Class 2A State Girls Cross-country Meet.

Oberholtzer, who placed 63rd in 19:11 at state last season, finished third overall with a time of 20:06.86 at the Jones Sectional last week.

As a team, the Bulldogs finished sixth with a score of 120.

RB volleyball

The Bulldogs (17-20) won their second straight Class 3A Regional Championship with a 25-14, 27-25 victory over Jones College Prep last week.

Rita Witteman led the Bulldogs with four kills, nine assists, two aces, four digs and a block.

LT football

The Lyons Township football team nearly pulled off an upset of Bolingbrook in the opening round of the Class 8A playoffs last week. The Lions ended up closing out their season with a 17-10 loss to the second-seeded Raiders.

Trailing 10-3 with minutes left in the final quarter, a pass by quarterback Ryan Mitchell on Bolingbrook’s 8-yard line was intercepted. Jamel Martin took the life out of LT with an 87-yard touchdown run on the next possession.

Lyons (5-5) made another run at an upset in the closing seconds when Jordan Hester scored from six yards out to cut the deficit to 17-10.

Bolingbrook recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

LT soccer

The Lions edged Hinsdale Central 3-2 in double overtime to win the Hinsdale Central Sectional on Saturday.

Lyons (23-3) had lost to the Red Devils earlier in the season.

The Lions shut out Fenwick 2-0 in the semifinal. Horacio Sanchez and Billy McGuinness both scored in the win.

Fenwick girls cross-country

Margaret Connelly and Rebecca Steinmeyer earned state qualifying spots at the Niles West Sectional on Saturday. Connelly (19:12) and Steinmeyer (19:16) finished among the first seven individuals to qualify.

As a team, the Friars finished ninth overall with 204 points.

Fenwick boys cross-country

Martin Grady will represent the Fenwick boys cross-country team at the upcoming Class 3A State Meet. The senior finished third overall in 14:58.42 at the Niles West Sectional.

Fenwick football

A week after falling to Brother Rice 28-21 to close out their regular season, the Friars ended their 2009 season entirely with a 17-7 loss to the Crusaders in the first round of the Prep Bowl playoffs on Friday night.

The Friars scored the first touchdown of the game in the second quarter, but it turned out to be their only touchdown. Joe Romano tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Nico Krajecki.

Brother Rice answered with two touchdowns in the second to go up 14-0 by halftime. After a 30-yard field goal by Brother Rice’s Pat Neilan near the end of the third, neither team scored again.

Fenwick closed out the season with an overall record of 3-7. Six opponents the Friars faced this season qualified for the state tournament.
