For the first time in school history, the Lyons Township boys soccer team now has a state soccer championship trophy.
The Lions edged Lake Zurich 2-1 in overtime at North Central College on Saturday to earn the hardware. Billy McGinness headed in the game-winner off a corner kick from Zach Pearsall at the 83:21 mark in overtime.
Horacio Sanchez gave Lyons a 1-0 lead in the second half of regulation with an unassisted goal. But the lead didn’t last long as Lake Zurich’s Eric Pothast countered with a goal to notch the game at 1-1.
Lyons closed out its historic season with an overall record of 26-3.
RB boys cross-country
The RB boys cross-country team finished 20th overall at the Class 2A State Meet held at Detweiller Park in Peoria on Saturday.
Peter Lyson led the Bulldogs by finishing 101st in 16:44.
Others who contributed included Keegan Buttimer (123rd, 17:04), Justin Pomey (125th, 17:04), Dave Melone (134th, 17:16), Chris Schomer (135th, 17:16), Joey Melone (143rd, 17:27) and Erwin Kehrt (161st, 18:09).
RB football
Riverside-Brookfield football players Alex Cebular, Brandon Cook, Louis Dietz, Matt Kenahan, Juan Gomez-Velez, Mark McDonagh, Ian Robertson, Matt Scott and Billy VandeMerkt were selected Metro Suburban All-conference last week.
LT boys cross-country
The Lyons Township boys cross-country team finished fifth overall at the Class 3A State Meet held at Detweiller Park in Peoria on Saturday.
Junior Sam Telfer led the Lions by finishing 24th in 15 minutes flat. Other LT finishers included Mike Moore (39th, 15:11), Robbie Kucera (68th, 15:30), Mark Holt (81st, 15:39), Stu Newstat (91st, 15:44), Andrew Allabastro (142nd, 16:01) and Robbie Keeler (156th, 16:11).
RB girls cross-country
Samantha Oberholtzer finished 5a1st at the Class 2A State Girls Meet on Saturday. The senior ran the 3-mile course in 19:26.
RB volleyball
The Riverside-Brookfield volleyball team ended its season with an overall record of 17-21 last week. The Bulldogs lost 25-15, 25-13 to Nazareth Academy in the Class 3A Nazareth Sectional semifinal.
Jessie Hutchens finished with five kills, a dig and a block for the Bulldogs. Rita Witteman dished out seven assists to go along with her six digs. Julene Kluba also contributed with three kills.
LT volleyball
The Lions edged Mother McAuley 26-24, 25-22 on Saturday to advance to the Class 4A State semifinals at Illinois State University in Normal this weekend.
Alexis Viliunas led the Lions with 12 kills, while Jocelyn Birks add 11 and Jamie Lundstrom chipped in 10 digs.
The Lions enter the Class 4A State finals with an overall record of 36-4.
LT girls cross-country
Sophomore Lisa Gordon led the Lions to 10th place at the Class 3A State Meet on Saturday. Gordon finished 42nd overall in 18:22.
Junior Carly Rocco placed 76th with a time of 18:41, while Eliza Dudley finished 78th in 18:42.
Fenwick volleyball
The Fenwick volleyball team’s season came to an end with a 25-18, 25-18 loss to Lyons Township in the St. Ignatius College Prep Sectional semifinal last week.
Sarah Hunt led the Friars with seven kills, while Nandi Tense and Kelly Brennan each finished with six kills apiece. Carriann Soukal tallied eight digs in the loss.
The Friars closed out the season with an overall record of 15-18.
Fenwick boys cross-country
Martin Brady, the lone representative from Fenwick at the Class 3A State Meet, closed out his high school cross-country career on a high note by finishing eighth overall in 14:48.
