Riverside-Brookfield’s Juan Gomez-Valez wrestled his way to a first-place finish at the Rex Lewis Invitational held at Buffalo Grove on Saturday.

Gomez-Valez (9-2) went 3-0 with two pins on the day in the 189-pound weight division.

The Bulldogs also received strong finishes from its heavier weights. Jim Silva (215-pound weight division) went 2-1 to finish second, while John Schraidt finished second at 285 pounds.

As a team, RB finished sixth. The Bulldogs host Fenton on Thursday in a dual meet that may ultimately decide the Metro Suburban Conference championship. The meet begins at 5 p.m.

RB boys basketball

The Riverside-Brookfield boys basketball team welcomed Timothy Christian into the Metro Suburban Conference with a 77-39 thumping on Friday night.

Sean McGonagill led the Bulldogs (5-1, 2-0) with 21 points, while Terrence Reed added 16. Billy VandeMerkt chipped in eight points and seven assists.

LT boys basketball

Jim Stamas scored 19 points to help lead the Lyons Township boys basketball team to a 68-50 nonconference victory over Sandburg on Saturday.

Dan LaLonde added 12 points for the Lions, who remain undefeated with six straight victories.

Fenwick girls basketball

The Friars played two games last week and Tricia Liston scored a total of 48 points. Liston scored 22 to lead the undefeated Friars (11-0, 4-0) past Nazareth 71-29 on Saturday afternoon. The Duke-bound senior scored 26 points in Fenwick’s 69-42 thrashing of Benet earlier in the week.

Kyra Navarrete added 10 points and five rebounds in the win over Nazareth, while Meredith Boardman chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds. Boardman scored 10 in the win over Benet, as did Alyssa Dengler. 

The Friars travel to Fremd on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. game.

Fenwick boys cross-country

Martin Grady finished 13th in 15:38 at the Foot Locker Cross-Country National Championship in San Diego on Saturday. Grady earned All-American honors.

Fenwick hockey

The Fenwick hockey team took out the frustration of falling to St. Rita twice by crushing Mt. Carmel 7-2 on Sunday. 

Dan Dory and Aidan Verbeke each scored two goals apiece in the win over Mt. Carmel. Matt Crook, Kale Johnstone and Conor Ward also scored for the Friars, while Nick Chiapetta finished with 20 saves in the net.

On Friday, Fenwick lost to St. Rita 7-6. The Friars had fallen to the Mustangs the night before 5-4 in overtime.

The Friars face a challenging week ahead with four games in four days. Fenwick takes on St. Viator, St. Ignatius, Loyola and Providence this week.
