On Monday, Oct. 18, there will be an informational meeting for those who might be interested in running for a seat on the Riverside-Brookfield Township High School District 208 Board of Education in the April 2011 election. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in Room 201 at the high school, 160 Ridgewood Road in Riverside.

At the meeting District 208 Interim Superintendent David Bonnette and District 208 school board President James Marciniak will provide attendees with an overview of the role and function of the Board of Education, committee structure, anticipated time commitment and the values of community service.

“I think it’s necessary,” Marciniak said. “If we’re going to get good candidates from the community folks need to know what they’re getting into. Some folks might shy away just because they don’t understand the nature of the job so hopefully we’ll take some of the mystery out of that and help them understand what a school board is and what we do and what the service is like.”

Informational packets for candidates will be available at the meeting along with materials published by the Illinois Association of School Boards.

Candidates for the school board are not required to attend the meeting and candidate packages can also be picked up at RB.

Four seats on the school board will be up for grabs in the April 5 election. Nominating petitions can have been available since Sept. 21 and can be filed by candidates with the board secretary between Dec.13 and Dec.20.
