Riverside-Broofield’s John Schraidt earned his way back to the Class 2A Individual State Wrestling Meet by finishing third at 285 pounds at the Lincoln-Way West Sectional on Saturday.

Schraidt, a senior with a 31-5 record this season, defeated Seth Gonzalez of Yorkville by forcing a fall at the 46-second mark.

The state meet will be held at Assembly Hall at the University of Illinois in Champaign beginning this Friday.

Slater, Skowronski sign with Saint Jo’s College

Riverside-Brookfield student athletes Watoris Slater and David Skowronski recently signed to play football at Saint Joseph College.

Pyritz named National Coach of the Year

Lyons Township volleyball coach Joann Pyritz was named Prepvolleyball.com’s National Coach of the Year.

Pyritz, a former LT student athlete who played on the school’s first state volleyball team in 1976, has been coaching the Lions for 22 years. Pyritz coached the team to a Class 4A state title last season, her second state championship as a coach. The Lions went 40-1 last season.

Pyritz currently holds a career coaching record of 650-214. She has never had a losing season.

Fenwick wrestling

Fenwick’s Matt Garelli will again compete at the Class 3A State Individual Wrestling Meet

The junior, who advanced to state last season, defeated Dan Carlson 12-2 to win the 103-pound weight class at the Franklin Park-Northlake Sectional on Saturday.

Along with Garelli (43-1), Grahman Joss and Steve Sreniawski also advanced out of the sectional. Joss finished third 152 pounds, while Sreniawski took second at 215.
