St. Mary Parish in Riverside will have a new pastor come July, when Rev. Thomas P. May takes up residence there.
May has been pastor of St. John Brebeuf Parish in northwest suburban Niles for the past 13 years. May announced his departure from St. John and his transfer to St. Mary in that church’s bulletin on March 13.
“I feel very blessed to have received this assignment and I look forward to serving the community there, but it is certainly with mixed emotions that I leave you,” May wrote in the parish bulletin. “I will most certainly miss you whom I have grown to know and love over these past 13 years.”
St. Mary has not yet announced May’s appointment as pastor.
In one way, it’s no surprise that the Chicago Archdiocese would look to St. John Brebeuf for St. Mary’s next pastor.
Rev. Robert Banzin was pastor at St. John before he was transferred to St. Mary as an associate. Banzin is still listed on the St. John Brebeuf bulletin as its pastor emeritus. Rev. Leon Wagner was also pastor at St. John’s before being named pastor of St. Mary in Riverside.
“I see a pattern here!” May quipped in the St. John Brebeuf Church bulletin on March 13.
When he arrives in Riverside, May will replace Monsignor R. George Sarauskas, who has been pastor at St. Mary since 2004. Sarauskas in January told parishioners he was leaving Riverside to tackle an archdiocesan finance project at the request of Cardinal Francis George.
