Unlike its cross-town rival, the Fenwick volleyball team heads into the season with nearly a completely new team. The Friars, who lost 12 seniors to graduation last season after going 11-14, return juniors Joe Kelly and Jeremy Gruszka, although both will be new to the middle hitter positions this year.
Head coach Katie Whitman will rely heavily on newcomers Pete Carey (right-side hitter) and Michael Brosnan (setter), who head up a group of nine other juniors on the squad.
“It’s a young team, but they are motivated and working hard so far,” said Whitman of her Friars. “A couple had been playing club ball during the off-season too improve as well.”
In the new restructured Catholic League this season, Fenwick falls into the division with St. Laurence, De La Salle, St. Joseph and Gordon Tech.
“While we’re all pretty evenly matched, I think if we play to our ability and keep improving, we have a good chance at taking the division,” said Whitman.
