A utility pole in the alley behind Riverside Bank caught fire this afternoon and briefly disrupted telephone service, electrical service and traffic in downtown Riverside. It was apparently an electrical fire.

Two Riverside firefighters got on the roof of the Riverside Bank building at 17 E. Burlington Street according to two eyewitnesses and put out the fire.

“The pole is pretty black and scorched,” said District 208 school board member Mike Welch who happened to be in the area Friday afternoon.

The fire was out by 3:25 p.m. and Riverside fire trucks and Commonwealth Edison emergency vehicles began to leave the scene. For a time electricity was out at Riverside Bank.

There were no injuries reported.

“It was just a minor incident,” said a Riverside fire fighter who didn’t want to state his name.
