The Brookfield-LaGrange Park Lions Club on May 11 announced their choices for police officer and firefighter of the year during a ceremony at P.J. Klems in Lyons.

Kenneth Bensfield was named Firefighter of the Year in Brookfield, while Sgt. James Burdett was named Brookfield Police Officer of the Year.

In addition, the Lions Club awarded grants of about $3,500 to each department to help pay for needed but unbudgeted equipment. The Brookfield Fire Department will use the grant money to purchase an EZ IO intravenous therapy device, while the Brookfield Police Department will use its grant for digital camera equipment.

“It is a privilege for the Lions Club to recognize the contributions of our communities’ emergency personnel and to help them with the equipment needed to serve us,” said Phil Bochniarz, Lions Club president-elect, in a press release.
