The Lyons Township baseball team defeated a familiar foe in fellow West Suburban Silver Division rival Glenbard West 7-2 in the St. Charles North Sectional final on Saturday. The Lions take on Streamwood on Monday (7 p.m.) in the Rockford Supersectional of the Class 4A playoffs.
Lyons No. 2 starter Zach Remigas (10-0) kept the Hilltoppers in relative check offensively, allowing two runs and striking out seven batters in five innings of solid work. The Lions (33-4) scored three runs in the first inning with key doubles from Steve Heilenbach and Tom Walsh. They tacked on four runs in the fourth inning as shortstop Spencer Mahoney (3-for-4) laced a two-RBI single. The Lions’ Mike Pett also hit well, finishing 2-for-3 on the day.
Glenbard West scored two runs in the sixth off LT reliever Keith Lehmann, but the Hilltoppers ultimately still lost to LT for the fourth time this spring.
LT claimed its 10th sectional championship (first since 2006).
The Lions will start University of Pennsylvania-bound pitcher Connor Cuff (9-0) against Streamwood (30-6) on Monday.
