A garage in the 3500 block of Grand Boulevard, Brookfield, sustained some minor damage Monday morning from a fire that started inside the building near the roof.

Firefighters were called to 3540 Grand Blvd. at 10:20 a.m. and arrived to find smoke billowing from the garage, which faces the street.

Capt. Ed Bermann said that the smoke originated “from the rafters, the upper storage area” of the garage and that the cause was “electrical in nature.” Firefighters could be seen taking pieces of charred lumber from the storage area just below the roof.

“We’re not sure if it’s related to the storm,” said Bermann, referring to the strong storm that rolled through the area at about 8 a.m.

A minivan and motorcycle kept in the garage may have sustained minor heat or smoke damage, Bermann said. The garage itself will need to have its roof repaired after firefighters used a chainsaw to cut a hole through it to ventilate the structure.

The 3500 block of Grand Boulevard was closed to traffic as emergency crews worked at the scene.
