A 21-year-old Brookfield man is in Cook County Jail after being charged Monday with stalking and aggravated battery for allegedly grabbing a female jogger’s buttocks.

According to police, Carlos Brito-Martinez was driving a blue 1995 Nissan in the vicinity of Washington and Arden avenues when he saw a 39-year-old Brookfield woman in white shorts jogging westbound at about 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 5.

The woman told police she was wearing headphones and noticed Brito-Martinez following her when she turned southbound from Washington onto Vernon Avenue. According to police, Brito-Martinez had parked his car in the near Arden and Washington and began jogging behind the woman, catching up to her in the 3500 block of Vernon Avenue.

Brito-Martinez reportedly gave the woman a “two thumbs up” sign and smiled strangely before grabbing her buttocks. The woman responded by taking off her cap and hitting Brito-Martinez with it.

A neighbor called police and Brito-Martinez attempted to flee, but the woman chased after him. Brito-Martinez repeatedly apologized, according to the report, and told police that “he messed up and was sorry.”

At a hearing at the Maybrook courthouse Tuesday, a Cook County Judge set Brito-Martinez’s bail at $75,000.
