Lake Forest 14
Fenwick 12
The Fenwick football team had its hopes of making the state playoffs dashed by a non-Illinois High School Association school on Saturday afternoon. The Friars fell 14-12 to Lake Forest Academy, an associate member of the Chicago Catholic League White Division this season but not yet a member of the IHSA.
Down 7-0 in the second quarter, the Friars recovered a Lake Forest fumble. Dan Lattner hit Sam Ainsworth for a 7-yard touchdown, but Fenwick failed to convert the 2-point conversion and continued to trail 7-6.
An 80-yard pass play on their first possession of the third quarter put the Caxys up 14-6. On third and 15, Fenwick receiver Nick Gallo hauled in a difficult catch from Lattner for a 25-yard touchdown in the final quarter, but the Friars again failed to convert a 2-point conversion.
“Lake Forest has some very good athletes, but we also made a lot of mistakes and just couldn’t find any rhythm in that first half,” said Scott Theis, Fenwick’s athletics director and interim head football coach. “I liked the way we picked it up in the second half, but we just ran out of time.”
Fenwick fumbled the ball on a punt return and the Caxys closed out the win by running out the clock.
Lake Forest Academy went into the game with an overall record of 1-6.
