The Riverside-Brookfield boys cross-country team placed fourth and advanced to this Saturday’s Class 2A State Meet to be held at Detweiller Park in Peoria by scoring 131 points at the Class 2A Nazareth Sectional last week.

The top RB runners included Travis Trevizo (16:10.67/10th place overall), Dan Curtin (16:41.34), Spencer Purcell (16:52.85), Kevin Faje (17:03.61), Joey Melone (17:05.08), Chris Dziagwa (17:16.42) and Jeremy Vasquez (17:20.02).

The Lions renewed their rivalry with Morton in the semifinals of the Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional last week. But the Mustangs emerged with a 4-3 win after four sudden death overtimes.

Jesus Morales’ penalty kick in extra time served as the game-winning goal for Morton (20-3-1). The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead before LT rallied with goals from Kevin Shaw and Elliot Borge in the second half. Kovas Zygas gave the Lions their first lead at 3-2 with a goal in the 77th minute of the match, but Morton tied the game in regulation a minute later.

LT (14-5-3) had another excellent season under head coach Paul Labbato earning a share of the West Suburban (Silver) Conference title, finishing as runner-up at the Pepsi Showdown, and capturing a seventh straight regional title.

The Lions opened defense of their Class 4A State Championship in impressive fashion with a pair of Proviso West Regional wins over Curie 25-8, 25-3 (semis) and then Fenwick 25-11, 25-12 in the title game.

Alexis Viliunas led the Lions with 11 kills, 16 assists and 2 aces.  Megan Miller had 14 digs.

RB girls volleyball

The Lady Bulldogs fell to Lemont 25-21, 25-14 in the Nazareth Regional semifinals to close out the season.

LT boys cross-country

Lyons tied Plainfield East with 163 points apiece for fifth place at the Lockport Sectional in Class 3A. Junior Michael Matusiak had the fastest time (16:29) for the Lions followed closely by James Ryan (16:32), Ryan Speir (16:38) and Dan Lupano (16:43). Other LT runners included Grant Smith (16:51), John Dombro (17:16) and Ed McCarter (17:27).

The Lions turned in a strong effort at the Lockport Sectional, garnering a second-place finish (87 points) behind Downers Grove South (68). Alex Daemicke and Haley Prokaski both ran a time of 19:03 for LT, followed by Lisa Gordon (19:50), Lexi Rudofski (20:01), Randie Speir (20:01), Rachel Walsh (20:21) and Tess Saibert (20:22).

Lyons won both the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays en route to second place with 253 points at the West Suburban (Silver) Conference Meet behind Hinsdale Central, which scored 296.

Louisa Hoffman, Jennifer Weigand, Kristine Rosenberger and Elly Vitek represented both of the Lions’ winning relay teams, which swam 1:40.01 in the 200 free relay and 3:38.07 in the 400 free relay. In individual events, Vitek took second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.63) and 100-yard freestyle (52.82), while Maddie Naughton also claimed a runner-up finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:12.65.

The Bulldogs finished in fourth place at the Independent Conference meet hosted by DeKalb.

Fenwick girls cross-country

The Fenwick girls cross-country team won its first sectional championship in school history by taking first at the Class 2A Fenton Sectional on Saturday. 

Fenwick’s Becky Steinmeyer won the meet with a time of 18:23, while Briana Daley finished second (18:25), Maddie Nicholson fifth (19:37) and Anna Schierl ninth (20:05). Megan Cahill (20:36), Rachel Lombard (20:41) and Janeen Latz (20:41) also finished with solid times for the Friars, who scored 33 points for the victory.

Jones finished a distant second with a team score of 79. 

The Class 2A State Meet will be held Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

RB girls cross-country

Senior Maggie McLaughlin advanced to the Class 2A State Meet this weekend with a strong showing at the Nazareth Sectional. McLaughlin posted a time of 19:24.78 to finish 12th overall, and the Bulldogs (160 points) took seventh in team competition.

Fenwick boys cross-country

Ryan Clardy advanced to the Class 3A State Meet by finishing 11th with a time of 15:23.60 at the Niles West Sectional on Saturday.
