Local residents who want to observe Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 11 will have several opportunities to do so.

First off, the North Riverside Recreation Department will honor veterans with a ceremony at the Village Commons, 2401 Desplaines Ave. starting at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to the special tribute.

In Brookfield, AMVETS William T. Gross Memorial Post #190 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Brookfield Post #3868 will hold a Veterans Day observance on Friday at 11 a.m. at Veterans Park, which is at the corner of Grand Boulevard and Sunnyside Avenue

Finally, Brookfield Zoo will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony on Friday,  beginning at 1 p.m.

The ceremony will be held place south of the zoo’s Roosevelt Fountain, beginning with a presentation by the color guard from Rickover Naval Academy, followed by the singing of the National Anthem performed by The Arlingtones as well as the placing of a memorial wreath at the fountain.

Glenn Granat, a curator for the Chicago Zoological Society as well as a U.S. Army veteran, will give a short talk entitled, “A Retrospective of the U.S. Military-the Revolution Through Present.”

Free general zoo admission offered that day to all guests (parking and special exhibit fees will still apply).
