Riverside Township Assessor Fran Sitkiewicz announced last week that property owners in the township may now file assessed valuation appeals with the Cook County Assessor through Monday, Feb. 27.

The notice came as something of a surprise since Riverside’s appeals period this year is so much earlier than usual.

“Our typical appeal period with the Cook County Assessor’s Office has been in May or June,” Sitkiewicz said. “This came as a surprise to us but we’ll do everything possible to get the word out and assist people in any way we can.”

The Riverside Township Assessor is available to help local taxpayers determine the best reason for filing an appeal, find comparables and complete the appropriate forms. The local assessor’s office will only be able to accept appeal applications through Wednesday, Feb. 22.

However, the Riverside Township Assessor’s office hours have been extended through mid-March for the appeal and senior freeze exemption renewal period. The office hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by appointment.

Property owners may also make appeals online directly with the Cook County Assessor’s Office at www.cookcountyassessor.com. Prior to making their online appeal they should contact the township assessor’s office first to obtain the best comparables.

The Riverside Township Assessor can be reached by phone at 447-7700 or email at 27rside@sbcglobal.net. Appointments are encouraged but not necessary.
