Lyons Township gymnast Kelsy Kurfirst earned a share of the state title in the uneven parallel bars with Glenbard North’s Amanda Quinn as each gymnast scored a 9.6 average in the state finals over the weekend.
Kurfirst became just the third individual state champion in the program’s history. She also tied with Riley Mahoney of Prairie Ridge Co-op for eighth place in the vault, scoring at 9.65. The Lions’ prized freshman finished ninth in the all-round standings with a total of 37.37,5 posting the following scores on Friday: vault (9.675), bars (9.625), beam (9.175) and floor (8.9) for a 9.344 per event average.
The Lions took sixth place overall with a score of 144.475. Maren Craig, Ali Stuck, Kalen Iffert and Kelly Ryser also represented LT in the team competition as Carmel (151.775) won its third consecutive state championship.
