The deadline for senior citizens in Cook County to mail in their senior and senior freeze exemption renewal applications has been extended to March 28 due to a delay in mailing out the materials by the county.

If you are over 65 and received the senior citizen exemption last year, you must re-apply for the exemption in 2012. If you are over 65, received the senior assessment freeze exemption last year and your 2010 household income is under $55,000, you must also re-apply for the exemption.

Taxpayers who turned 65 during 2011 and homeowners who purchased new homes in 2010 may now apply for first-time senior citizen and homeowner exemptions.

Residents in Riverside Township who would like assistance with the exemption applications should contact Riverside Township Assessor Fran Sitkiewicz at 708-447-7700. Residents of Proviso Township should contact Assessor Steven Zawaski at 708-449-4304. Residents of Lyons Township should contact Assessor Barbara Weyrick at 708-482-8300.
