Harold A. Kartje, 89, of Brookfield, died April 10, 2012.

Born on July 20, 1922 in Chicago, Mr. Kartje served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war he operated Kartje’s Bakery in Brookfield, a store opened by his father on Grand Boulevard in 1922.

Mr. Kartje was the husband of the late Eleanor L. Kartje (nee Bailey); the father of Christine (Michael) Gabler, Kathleen (Robert) Palmer, Wendy Kartje M.D., Daniel Kartje, Becky Kartje M.D. and Michael (Anne) Kartje; the grandfather of Jason (Tara) Gabler, Keith Gabler, Geoff Gabler, Bobby (Bonny) Palmer, Michael (Emily) Palmer, Emily (Fred) Miller, Jon Tillotson, Sean Tillotson, Elizabeth Kartje, Catherine Kartje, Mike Kartje, Alex Kartje and Oliver Kartje; and the great-grandfather of Jason Gabler Jr., Charlie Gabler, John Gabler, Madison Alborn and Robert Palmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Christ and Mary (nee Pfendt) Kartje; and one brother and one sister.

A funeral service was held April 12 at Kuratko-Nosek Funeral Home, North Riverside, followed by interment at St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove.
