Frederick Thomas McLaughlin, 88, a resident of North Riverside, died June 4, 2012 at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.

Born in Chicago on April 19, 1924 to James H. and Ruth A. McLaughlin, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following the war, Mr. McLaughlin served as a police officer until his retirement.

Mr. McLaughlin was a member of the Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society of the Chicago Police Department, American Legion Post #1941 and North riverside VFW Post #2378.

He was the lifelong friend and ex-husband of Mary McLaughlin; the father of Maureen (Fred) Aikens, Linda (Tom) Purl and Muffy (Brian) O’Donnell; the grandfather of Tom (Kacie) Purl, Michael Purl, Ashley (Andrew) Phelan, Brandon Aikens, Sean O’Donnell and Mac O’Donnell; the great-grandfather of Tommy Purl; the brother of the late Dr. James (Kay) McLaughlin; the uncle to many nieces and nephews; and the dear friend of Fran Crowley.

A funeral Mass was celebrated June 11 at St. Louise de Marillac Church in LaGrange Park, followed by interment at Abraham Lincoln Cemetery in Elwood.
