Cook County Sheriff’s Police took two men into custody Wednesday morning at an apartment in the 8800 block of 45th Place in Brookfield. According to police sources, only one of the men is considered a suspect in what the Cook County Medical Examiner termed a homicide in an alleged elder abuse case dating back to August 2011.
No charges have been filed. Attempts to contact a Cook County Sheriff’s Department spokesman were not immediately successful.
On Sept. 1, 2011, a 60-year-old Brookfield woman died several days after authorities were tipped off that she may have been intentionally neglected by her husband, according to a police report. The woman was hospitalized and described in the police report as weighing just 85 pounds and suffering from multiple serious bedsores, including ones where gangrene had already set in.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Elder Abuse Unit took over the case on Sept. 20, 2011. In January 2012, according to a Brookfield police report, the woman’s death was classified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as a homicide.
Since that time, Brookfield police have been assisting Cook County Sheriff’s Police in an investigation involving possible financial crimes related to the woman’s death, according to the police report.
This story has been changed to correct the date of death for the woman who was allegedly neglected.
